With the next Wonky nearly a week away, it’s time to introduce the lineup 🚨 Scanner: Scanner (Robin Rimbaud) traverses the experimental terrain between sound and space, connecting a bewilderingly diverse array of genres. Since 1991, he has been intensely active in sonic art, producing concerts, installations and recordings. From pioneering virtual reality ballet to permanent sound installations in Paris, Scanner has continuously pushed the boundaries of sound. He has performed and exhibited in renowned venues worldwide, including SFMOMA, Tate Modern, and the Bolshoi Theatre, and scored over 75 contemporary dance productions for companies like the Royal Ballet and Merce Cunningham. His albums Mass Observation (1994), Delivery (1997), and An Ascent(2020) were hailed by critics as innovative and inspirational works of contemporary electronic music. Even though the Fest couldn’t go ahead, we still want to put you on to the incredible artists that were coming along… so, meet the intricate polyrhythmic cascades of flywheel 🔦UK artist flywheel is a musician and producer based in London. With recent releases on Matthew Herbert’s Accidental JNR label and Gimme A Break Records preceded by a run of self-releases, his productions span leftfield techno, ambient and percussive club music. flywheel’s live show combines synths and drum machines with analogue tape, and he has previously carried out sound installation and live scoring work. His 2024 EP, ‘Writ Large’, for Prague’s YUKU sees flywheel veer further toward a club-focused sound, prioritising sound design, momentum and rhythmic interplay. Our fave at Wonky is ‘Axes’ ~ sound on for a listen.

Described as “inner city ambient for chaotic living” by Crack Magazine, the Manchester-based duo is bringing their uniquely spacious urban dubscapes to our main stage. The duo are producers, visual artists, performers, and hosts on NTS Radio. Heavily inspired by the industrial architecture of Northwest England and notions of travel, their sonic framework evokes images of rust and disintegrating concrete and sensations of movement and redemption — exuding a distorted analogue soul offering escape into their overcast skies. Space Afrika have been nominated by DJ Mag as “Best Live Act” and named “one of The 15 Top Live Acts” by Mixmag, and they’re bringing their groundbreaking performance style to Wonky with their Hybrid Live AV Set featuring bassist GABRIEL. Artist Spotlight ~ @miekoshimizumico 🔦 Mieko Shimizu is a boldly nonconformist Japanese singer, songwriter, composer and producer and a resident artist for us at Wonky🌀Based in London, Mieko Shimizu has released numerous albums and singles, as she continues to make her mark on avant-garde and experimental genres. Mieko has played at Sonar, alongside the mighty Kraftwerk and supported Massive Attack at their Melt Festival. She has been an ‘Emerging Artist in Residence’ at London’s Southbank Centre where she collaborated with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. She first erupted onto the scene as Apache 61; her searing alter ego, fusing layers of cross-woven breaks and battling shards of sub-bass. As Mieko Shimizu, her last album, ‘My Tentacles’ saw her return to a deeper, more reflective state in the cavernous depth of beautiful symphonic songs that oscillated with glitchy electronica.
